Our History
The Carpet Shoppe first opened its doors on January 2, 1974, within the Consumer City Furniture Store at 2310 Kamehameha Highway. At that time the Company consisted of five employees. By June of 1974, the first of many exciting expansions had begun. The Installation Department was started to service the Company's customers, and a small warehouse was acquired to store the recently increased inventory and necessary installation tools and equipment. Then in 1976, our first American Carpet Company Showroom opened on Young Street. At that time, it was the largest freestanding carpet showroom in Hawaii. And as the volume of business rapidly increased, the number of employees also continued to grow. We hired our Company's first inventory and scheduling personnel, which started our Service Department.
On May 1, 1978, we opened our showroom in the BJ Furniture Store on Beretania Street. And in August of 1978, The Carpet Shoppe, Inc., which had now outgrown the small showroom in the Consumer City Store was moved to a new location, with room for both the warehouse and showroom in the same building. With this move, The Carpet Shoppe name for our retail outlet was phased out and was taken as the name of the corporation. The new location opened as the American Carpet Company.
The years of 1979 and 1980 were both growth years for the Company. The warehouse expanded its inventory to include a larger, and more varied selection of goods; and new sales and installation personnel were added to meet the Company's increasing needs.
In March of 1981, we moved to our present location at 302 Sand Island Access Road-a modern, effective showroom with a huge warehouse and generous office space.
By November of 1986, the Company changed its name from American Carpet Company to American Carpet & Drapery Company, and a contract department was opened to service the needs of contractors and architects.
In July of 1988, the Company joined Carpet One, a national organization of independent carpet dealers who collectively purchase together to obtain the lowest prices. They also collectively merchandise, advertise, and share operational ideas to provide our customers the best products at the highest level of service.
Then in early 1994, American Carpet & Drapery Company changed its name to American Carpet One. In May of 2001, American Carpet One partnered with Stainmaster® to open Hawaii’s first Stainmaster Flooring Center® ( SFC ). The SFC offers the largest and best Stainmaster® Carpets in the industry with the best warranties, featuring the Stainmaster® Ultra Life Carpets. The SFC is also designed to simplify the buying, taking the stress out of the customer’s shopping experience.
Today, Carpet One has over 950 stores in North Amercia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Guam with total sales of over $5 billion.
