Butler Floor & Carpet Co. had its humble beginnings on 331 South Washington Street in Butler, PA. Originally a 15’ x 25’ sales floor, a small office on the first floor, and a phone number of 74016, the company paled in comparison to the business today.

With only his entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to be successful, Loyd Croft, a war veteran working as a mechanical engineer for Spang Co., wanted to run his own business. In 1949 the opportunity arose for Loyd to purchase Butler Floor Co. With no background in floor coverings or previous experience managing a business, Loyd took the plunge and purchased the company from Eddie Trampson.

Loyd and one other salesman ran the store, with sales in both residential and commercial hard surface flooring. At the time, linoleum was the floor to have, and the asphalt tile being installed was still made with asbestos. Customer selection was limited to a few colors of linoleum and rubber tile and ten colors of asphalt tile. Plastic wall tile was also a popular item for bathroom and kitchen walls.

Butler Floor moved to a new building at 231 West Wayne Street in 1957, where they were co-tenants with Gregg Glass Co. Business was good and saw expansion into acoustic ceiling sales and the eventual takeover of the Gregg Glass space, as well as the Tip Top Bakery facility.

Carpet was added to Butler Floor’s sales selection in 1966. Large rolls of carpet were stored right on the sales floor, so when a customer walked in and made a selection, the salespeople could cut the carpet right there on the spot.

Brothers, Dave and Jack Croft took over the company as partners in 1972 and continued to develop the business. In 1987, Butler Floor moved again to their current location at 1763 North Main Street Ext., one mile north of the Clearview Mall. A second company was added, Butler Floor & Carpet Co., Inc. to represent the residential division, while Butler Floor Co. continued to manage the commercial flooring and acoustic business.

The public often thinks that as a small, private flooring dealer, Butler Floor will be more expensive than the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s. Instead, they find competitive pricing, experienced salespeople and installers, plus a professionalism that can’t be matched by those big stores.

Butler Floor’s knowledgeable staff is more than happy to assist a customer with their questions or concerns. If there are any issues during installation, the customer is always pleased to find that Butler Floor is quick to correct the problem with no hassles.

Don't judge the quality by feel alone
Thick and luxurious carpet can fool you at times. Determine the performance you want and the conditions effecting your carpet. A tighter twisted fiber doesn't feel as soft but it will generally give you better performance over the life of the carpet. A tightly twisted yarn will resist soiling, matting and crushing. When a yarn is not tightly twisted it may feel more luxurious but it will tend to crush and flatten out more quickly.

Generally speaking you can review the stain resistance, anti-static claims and wear warranties right on the back of the sample. You also will see the type of fiber ( nylon, polyester, polypropylene, etc.), the face weight, density, and twist.

The best-selling type of carpet is textured cut pile. Cutting looped carpet fibers at the top creates cut pile with yarn bundles standing straight. Preshearing cut pile several times creates a luxurious appearance.
Cut pile is less resistant to crushing than other types of Carpet.

Saxony

Saxonies are tightly twisted cut piles that are heatset straight. Saxonies consist of two or more fibers twisted together in a yarn. They provide a soft texture for formal and informal areas. Saxonies show every footprint and vacuum-cleaner mark. These carpets have medium durability.
Texture & Textured Saxonies
These textures are the best-selling carpetsand work well in informal areas (such as family rooms and children’s bedrooms) because of its soft feel. textures are tightly twisted and texture heatset for medium durability. They have a multi-colored look that disguises tracks and footprints.

Velvet & Plush

Velvets & Plushes are lightly twisted and have a uniform color. They are softer and more level than textures. Frieze

Level Loop Pile

Level loop pile is made by weaving even loops of yarn into carpet backing at both ends. This type of carpet is very durable and track resistant because of its strong loops. Higher loops create a more luxurious appearance. Level loop piles with short and densely packed loops are easy to clean. They prevent dirt from filtering into carpet. This type of carpet is ideal for high traffic areas.

Berber

Berbers are increasing in popularity faster than any other type ofcarpet. Berbers limit footprints and vacuum tracks in informal areas. Berbers can have thicker yarns than other level loop pile carpets for high durability. These loops can retain dirt and may be damaged from snags. Berbers come in expensive wool fibers or less expensive nylon, olefin, or nylon-olefin fibers.
Multi-Level Loop Pile
Multi-level loop pile is like level loop pile except that the loop heights vary (usually two to three different loop heights). This carpet creates an appearance of random texture. This type of carpet is good for high traffic areas but the smaller loops can sometimes hold more dirt.

Understanding fiber is key to understanding carpet. It breaks down easily into two major categories, synthetic carpet fibers and natural. Natural carpet fibers are derived from animal or vegetable sources that are processed further to make yarn. Cotton and jute are the primary vegetable-based fibers while wool is the most popular of the animal-based variety. Coastal Carolina Carpet & Tile

Continuing the quest of Roger De Clerck, founder of Beaulieu Belgium, Mieke and Carl Bouckaert established Beaulieu of America in 1978 as the first producer of polypropylene oriental rugs. As sales grew Carl and Mieke invested in yarn extrusion in 1981 becoming the first manufacturer in the carpet and rug industry to produce their own yarn. Sparked by continued growth, the Bouckaerts diversified into tufting carpet in 1984, establishing a factory known today as Beaulieu Commercial in Chatsworth, Georgia.

In 1987, Beaulieu of America's extrusion capacity was greatly increased with the addition of the Bridgeport, Alabama facility. This modern facility gives Beaulieu the ability to produce nylon polymers and nylon yarns. In 1990, Beaulieu continued its vertical integration with the addition of yet another new facility in Bridgeport, Alabama for the extrusion of polypropylene staple fiber, polypropylene slit film, and weaving of primary and secondary backing.

The expansion in yarn extrusion and polymer capacity is being driven by the growth of the carpet and rug manufacturing. From the first carpet manufactured in 1984 to the acquisition of Conquest Carpet Mills, Interloom, Coronet Industries, Grass More and D&W Carpets, through the establishment of Murray Fabrics, Beaulieu of America has rapidly grown into the world's third largest carpet producer. With the additions of Marglen Industries, Columbus Carpet Mills, and Peerless Carpet Corporation, Beaulieu of America has further strengthened its position as the number three soft floor covering producer in the world.

Beaulieu of America also looks outside the U.S. borders for growth opportunities. In 1980, Beaulieu Canada was founded for the manufacturing of woven rugs. The 1990 purchase of Coronet yielded Coronet Canada, the second largest manufacturer in Canada. In 1998, Beaulieu acquired Peerless Carpet Corporation, then the number one carpet producer in Canada. This acquisition secured Beaulieu Canada's position as the largest manufacturer of Carpet in Canada. Overseas production was expanded in 1995 when Beaulieu acquired an Australian Manufacturer, Sterling Carpet Mills, creating Beaulieu Australia. New stain and soil resistant technology makes today's lighter color carpet much easier to clean, allowing more decorating options. Textures: Carpet construction - how the yarn is "tufted" into backing affects its texture and ultimately, the long-term durability and appearance of the carpet.

Level loop pile: Loops of equal height. Generally offers long lasting wear for high traffic areas. Many of today's popular Berbers are level loop.

Multilevel loop pile: Usually have two to three different loop heights to create pattern effects. Provides good durability.

Cut Pile: Loops are cut, leaving individual yarn tufts. Still one of today's most popular constructions, it's durability is achieved with factors including the type of fiber, density of tufts, and the amount of twist in the yarn.

Cut and loop pile: Combination of cut and looped yarns. Provides variety of surfaces textures, including sculptured effects

Frieze: The yarns in this style are tightly twisted to create a curly, textured appearance. This style also minimizes the appearance of footprints and vacuum marks and is extremely durable.

Our History

It started in Biddeford, Maine with a vacuum store in the 1970's.

George Durfee recognized the perfect fit that adding carpet would provide to his vacuum business. From Biddeford, we moved to Topsham and then to the Bath Road in Brunswick. Originally we were across from the Navy base and they established that land as a clear zone and we were forced to relocate. In 1983 we built our present location and that is when George's dream of a complete flooring/vacuum business became a reality. Today we are one of the largest and most recognized flooring stores in Maine and we are very proud of that.

His philosophy of the best products at the best price with a focus on good customer service and workmanship is the core of our business foundation and is still the way the business operates today. The store is managed by Andy Hartigan who originally started in 1986 working as a teenager part time in the warehouse. Under George's direction, Andy has grown up in the business and knows every aspect of providing excellent customer service. Even though George is no longer here to watch the business thrive under Andy's management, his legacy lives on in the family business that he started.

Carpet tiles consist normally of bonded carpet. Their main advantage is that you can replace a damaged or worn area without having to replace the whole carpet. Tiles from underneath furniture, for example, can be swapped with those in high-traffic area to even out wear. They also allow easy access to under-floor wiring or plumbing. Extra replacement tiles should be purchased with the main batch, as those brought at a later date will almost certainly be slightly different color.

Carpet tile turns the messy, awkward job of carpet installation into a quick and easy one. Placement requires less time and few special tools. This type of flooring can be chosen for any room. The pile is not as dense as that in rolled carpet, but it can serve well in both high and low traffic areas.

Carpet Tile

Carpet tile (or "carpet squares") normally comes in one size: 18 x l8 inches. Varying thickness’ and patterns are available, as well as hundreds of different colors. They can be purchased either dry-backed or self-sticking. The dry-backed version needs a special adhesive or, for less permanent jobs, double-faced tape. These can go over almost any surface, as long as it is clean and dry. However, it is not highly recommended for use in below-ground areas, such as a basement, because it could mildew.
